Murals Around the Square
Charleston's reputation as a city of murals is growing as
more and more visitors to our town learn of the project.
In 1998, local artists gathered their paintbrushes, climbed
onto a scaffold and began transforming dull walls of
downtown buildings into impressive works of art.
The "Murals Around the Square" are worth a walking tour.
The tour spans over a three block area and you will need no
more than 30 minutes to complete it.
Charleston Historic District
The Courthouse Square and Historic District are
Charleston's best kept secret. With specialty stores
and unique restaurants overlooking the majestic
Coles County Courthouse, the Charleston Historic
District will treat you to the best. Seasonal festivals
and a Farmers market occur here.
Jackson Avenue Coffee Shop, a confectionery and
ice cream shop, a gift shop, and several other
quaint shops are around the square.

Visit the 1840's farm of Thomas and Sarah Bush
Lincoln, parents of our 16th president. See daily
domestic and farming activities come alive on this
"living historical farm." Then, visit the nearby
Stephen Sargent farm, a second 1840's farmstead
that has been moved to the site to contrast the
Sargent's "progressive" farming with the Lincoln's
"traditional" farming lifestyle.
